Sn0wbreeze

iH8sn0w has also released a new version of Sn0wbreeze (v2.9.5), which adds support for the revised iOS 5.1.1 that was released by Apple for GSM iPhone 4 users.

iH8sn0w has released Sn0wbreeze v2.9.4, which includes suport for iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV.

In addition to support for the revised iOS 5.1.1, iH8sn0w has also included a fix for location services for iPhone 3GS users (iPad baseband users).

Sn0wbreeze allows users to create custom iOS 5.1.1 firmware file that is pre-jailbroken, which can then be used to upgrade their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iOS 5.1.1. In case of iPhone, Sn0wbreeze also preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that it can be unlocked using Ultrasn0w (though Ultrasn0w is not yet compatible with iOS 5.1.1).

Facebook Planning to Release Facebook Phone by 2013; Hiring iPhone Engineers

Facebook

The New York Times reports that Facebook is planning to release a smartphone by 2013 and has hired former Apple employees who have worked on the iPhone and iPad.

This is not the first time we're hearing rumors of a Facebook phone. Back in November 2011, a rumor claimed that the Facebook Phone existed and is codenamed "buffy". Facebook had reportedly partnered with HTC to build these phones, which would be running a custom version of Android.

The NYT report claims that it would be Facebook's third attempt to build a phone.

Employees of Facebook and several engineers who have been sought out by recruiters there, as well as people briefed on Facebook’s plans, say the company hopes to release its own smartphone by next year.

The company has already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the iPhone, and one who worked on the iPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said.

Experts believe that Facebook could monetize on mobile devices better if it launches its own mobile phone (platform).

The chatter about the possibility of a Facebook phone has grown louder after it highlighted in the S-1 filing before the IPO, that the number of ads per user was dropping due to the growth of users using the site on their mobile devices.

“When you offer an advertising-based phone, you’re targeting all the users on prepay that are budget-conscious of their communications costs,” said Carolina Milanesi, a vice president and analyst for the Gartner Group. [..]

[..] After all, both Facebook and Google make their money through advertising. If the companies have the opportunity to continually put ads in front of people on a smartphone screen, you would think the only question left would be to pick the right ringtone that makes that ka-ching sound.

With Twitter being baked into iOS and Google+ being built into Android, it isn't really surprising that Facebook wants to build its own phone. With negotiations between Apple and Facebook breaking down over deep integration into iOS, the social network desperately needs to figure out a strategy for mobile devices beyond just apps.

Mark Zuckerberg also doesn't seem to be happy creating just apps for other mobile platforms as he does not have much control.

“Mark is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms,” a Facebook employee said.

As Business Insider points out, Facebook seems to be slowly building the apps required for a smartphone such as the Facebook messages, Facebook Camera. It is reportedly interested in buying browser maker Opera, which would solve the problem of developing a web browser for the Facebook phone.

However, we don't think building a Facebook phone for a company, which has very little expertise in hardware seems like the best strategy, especially if the motivation is monetization by showing users ads. We're also concerned how this would impact Facebook apps on competing mobile platforms like iOS. We've already seen this not go in the favor of users. For example: Google hasn't launched its free Navigation app for the iPhone as it wants it to be one of the unique selling points for Android-based smartphones. That seems like a good strategy from a short term point of view, but once Apple launches its own Maps app (along with a desktop version), iOS device users could end up switching to Apple's maps app even on the computer. We don't think alienating users just because they're using other mobile platform will play out well in the long term.

It will be interesting to see how Facebook approaches this conflict of interest if it does indeed end up launching a Facebook Phone.

Analyst: Next-Gen iPhone in October; Apple Television in Early 2013

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, a long time Apple analyst, is quite bullish on Apple's stock.

Fortune reports that he is predicting that Apple's stock will hit $1000 within the next two years.

Here're his top 10 ideas, which he believes will help Apple's stock, which closed at $562.29 on Friday, to reach $1000.

An aggressive product roadmap. Munster expects a rapid sequence of new products and product updates over the next 12 months, including a new iPhone, new Macs, a new iPad and a TV.A huge iPhone 5 upgrade. He predicts it will happen in October and be, in his words, "the biggest consumer electronics product launch of 2012 as well as the biggest device upgrade cycle in smartphone history."Apple television in 2013. Munster hasn't lost the faith. He expects it to be announced this December and priced between $1,500 and $2,000 for screen sizes ranging from 42" to 55".Carrier subsidies to continue. For at least another 2-3 years. Despite the chatter about reducing the subsidies they pay for the iPhone, carriers like the low churn rates, the fact that the device sells itself and that they don't have to pay Apple a bounty for each sale.40% gross margins. Apple's profit margins are the envy of the tech sector, and Munster expects them to continue for at least three more years."Heart transplant" strategy. This is Apple's strategy of eliminating old products as quickly as possible, streamlining its product line and securing the best component prices possible (which translates to higher margins).China's adoption curve. In the U.S., iPhone sales slowed down 34% in the second quarter of iPhone 4S sales. Munster doesn't think that will happen in China, where the iPhone and iPad are just taking off.Tablets will be bigger than PCs. By 2020, Munster estimates, tablets will be outselling personal computers and the iPad will still dominate the market.Enterprise sales. Apple won't change its spots; it will continue to rely on consumer adoption to drive adoption in the corporate market -- at least for iPhones and iPads. Macs not so much, because unlike Microsoft (MSFT), Apple doesn't support old operating systems until the end of time. The largest registered user base in the tech world. Although Apple runs its services (iTunes, App Store, etc.) at just above break-even, those services make Apple's hardware platforms both very big and very sticky. Once you give Apple your credit card number, you tend to stick around.

You can also check out Gene Munster's interview on Bloomberg Television's "Bloomberg West" back in April, where he claimed that the next generation iPhone will be the mother of all upgrades (unfortunately, it won't work on iOS devices as it needs Flash).

What Does The New iPad Tell Us About The Next Generation iPhone

iPhone Daylight Savings Time Bug Strikes Again

iPhone Clock

The Day Light Savings (DST) started in the US few hours back when the clocks moved forward from 1:59 am to 3:00 am.

However, some iPhone users are reporting all sorts of problems with the DST changes.

TUAW reports:

Several readers report that rather than jumping forward an hour last night as expected, their iPhone clocks actually shifted in the wrong direction -- back an hour -- because the automatic time zone adjustment went wonky. A reader in Nashville has a phone that thinks he's in Mountain Time; a reader in Florida's phone is convinced it should be on Chicago time. Our colleague Mel Martin lives in Arizona, which mostly does not observe DST at all; nevertheless, his phone (which had automatic time zone settings & location settings on) incorrectly jumped forward one hour.

This meant that the iPhone alarms went off at the wrong time for some of the users. This is not the first time that iPhone has been hit by the time bug, iPhone alarms had stopped working when we entered the new year and a DST bug had also affected iPhone users in 2010 and 2011.

In most cases, restarting the iPhone or enabling/disabling "Set Automatic" (timezone) settings (Settings->General->Data & Time) resolves the issue. It is also possible that some of these users are on an older version of iOS, which doesn't include a fix for the DST issue. So if you depend on your iPhone alarm clock then please be aware of the issue and possible workarounds to fix it.

Were you affected by the issue or your iPhone clock moved forward by an hour just fine? Let us know in the comments.

Tether Launches HTML5-Based Tethering Solution For iPhone

iPad 2

Back in November 2011, Apple had removed a tethering application from Tether called iTether.

Apple has been banning such applications from the App Store possibly due to pressure from carriers like AT&T, Verizon and Sprint who offer tethering plans for $20 per month that can be used using the Personal Hotspot feature that is available for iPhone users.

Interestingly, Tether has just released a new HTML5-based tethering solution for the iPhone, which means that  users don't need to download an app from the App Store. They've announced the release of the new HTML5 based tethering application on their blog:

"It was clear from our initial application iTether, there was enormous demand within the iPhone ecosystem," says Tim Burke, CEO of Tether. "It was unfortunate that Apple decided to remove our application, only 20 hours after we launched. However, this caused us to innovate. Our underlying patent-pending technology behind Tether for iPhone is unlike anything on the market."

Tether's new version for the iPhone is purely based on HTML5 and creates a completely wireless connection over AdHoc. This circumvents the need of buying the application directly from Apple's App Store and allows any iPhone or iPad with a data connection to allow tethering.

The HTML5-based application is a companion app for the Mac and PC versions, which allows users to use their iPhone's data connection to surf the internet on a Mac or PC over USB.

Tether is offering the tethering service for a yearly fee of $30 per on their website with a 30-day money back guarantee.

It remains to be seen if Tether's HTML-based tethering solution for the iPhone will also bypass the checks that carriers apparently have in place to detect such unofficial tethering.

Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2: Tethered Jailbreak For iOS 5.1 For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch Released

Sn0wbreeze

iH8sn0w has also released Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 to jailbreak iOS 5.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that was just released by Apple.

Sn0wbreeze is considered the unofficial PwnageTool for Windows. It allows users to create custom iOS 5.1 firmware file that is pre-jailbroken, which can then be used to upgrade their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iOS 5.1. In case of iPhone, Sn0wbreeze also preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that it can be unlocked using Ultrasn0w (though Ultrasn0w is not yet compatible with iOS 5.1 yet).

According to the release notes, Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 includes the following features:

Added Tethered Jailbreak support for 3GS/iPod Touch 3/A4 Users on iOS 5.1 (9B176)iPhone 3GS old-bootrom users are untethered on 5.1/9B176 (as usual).Bug Fixes (Specifically with the iPad baseband and iPhone 2G).Re-added the iPhone Dev-Team's iPhone 2G permanent unlock 'BootNeuter'.Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 supports the following iOS 5.1 devices:Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 supports an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) and a tethered jailbreak for the remaining iOS 5.1 devices mentioned above, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot. Sn0wbreeze cannot jailbreak iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, which are powered by Apple's A5 chip. iH8sn0w explains why the new version of Sn0wbreeze does not support iPhone 4S and iPad 2 currently:

A low level (DFU/iBoot/LLB) exploit is required to start the restoration of custom IPSWs. The past two jailbreaks (JailbreakMe & absinthe) for the A5 worked within iOS itself. These exploits are not capable of bringing the iDevice into a state where it will accept custom IPSWs. Therefore, an A5 device cannot currently downgrade to an iOS revision that Apple is no longer signing (even with SHSH blobs) and it cannot preserve the baseband when updating to a newer iOS revision.

Please note that iPhone Dev team strongly recommends jailbreakers and unlockers to avoid upgrading to iOS 5.1 so use Sn0wbreeze or recently released Redsn0w only if you have accidentally upgraded to iOS 5.1.

But if you can't wait then you can download Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 for Windows using this link.

DIY iPhone Boom Box

Iphoneboom

Who says the digital age has destroyed our hands-on creativity? Not Marcus Triest. The University of Oregon senior created an iPhone boombox made of wood with and a line of clear acrylic in between. According to an interview from the local CBS station in Eugene, Oregon, Triest was upset with the “gimmicky, plastic sort of feel” of current boom boxes and wanted to create something durable to slip into his back pack.

BLOG: 7 Booming Wireless Speakers

The industrial design student posted the instructions on Instructables. The project requires little in the ways of materials, but plenty of heavy duty tools and workshop know-how. If you’re into that and want to try your hand at building your own boom box, it’s definitely a project worth checking out.

Can your iPhone act as a self-defense weapon?

When you’re at the end of your day, you start to head to your car so you can kick off your shoes at home. However, if you are stuck walking out to your car at night, chances are you get a little nervous when you feel that things are ?too quiet?. You can’t really carry a gun or knife on you during the work day, but what about having a spare iPhone case?

It’s called the Smartguard iPhone Case, and its main goal is to keep you safe. It has a specially shaped can of Oleoresin Capisum pepper spray built-in. A plastic tab will make sure that it doesn’t misfire, but within this tiny canister is 6 half-second bursts of excruciating spray that has a five foot radius. Needless to say, this is going to stop a mugger in their tracks. It appears that this is only available in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria though, costing about $50 for the case, and $27 for additional bottles of pepper spray.

Build your own iPhone Boombox

We all like to listen to music on the go. Whether it be in the car, on a stroll in a woods, or having a picnic at the park, it’s nice to have some background music to accompany your day. Your iPhone likely carries a good hunk of your music, but it’s difficult to get much sound out of such a tiny device. Instead of paying a hefty sum of money on purchasing speakers, why not make some of your own?

This iPhone Boombox project over at Instructables will give your music a boost without taking up much space or money, compared to other portable systems. All it needs are simple materials like fiberboard, a speaker, switch, and battery pack to make music on the go inexpensive and accessible. You will have to shell out some money on materials, but making something with your own hands is definitely a priceless experience, right?

Cord-On-Board iPhone Case ensures that you always have a charging cable

How many times have you found that your phone is dying, and you have no way to charge it? It’s never? a good feeling, as for many people, a smartphone keeps them connected to the rest of their lives. So what do you do when your tiny email and texting machine starts to die? Well, if you have the Cord-On-Board Case, you need only find yourself an available USB port.

The idea behind this case is a rather interesting one. Instead of being forced to carry around an extra cord in your pockets, the cable is stored inside the case. Sure, it adds a bit of bulk to the phone, but the convenience factor is pretty nice. The $25 price seems like a steal, as well. Not only do you get the case, but you’ll get a custom USB cable and screen protector. If you give them an extra $12, they’ll even throw in a car USB adapter, for keeping your phone juiced up on the road.

Update On iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPhone 4S/4/3GS, iPod Touch 4G/3G, Apple TV 2G

greenpois0n

iOS hacker - pod2G has developed an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and Apple TV 2G and has made progress on the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 so far.

In the latest blog post, he has announced that he has handed over the details of the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and Apple TV 2G to Chronic Dev team, while he focusses on the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 that are powered by Apple's A5 processor. He explains:

I read the comments on the blog, and I know that a lot of people are waiting for the A5 jailbreak.

Also, I know there are tons of people out there with A4 or even earlier devices who wants the untether now and don't care about it could be interesting to wait A5 is finished to release or even 5.1, so that we don't waste an exploit that took me months to find and develop.

I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that chronic-dev could help me.

So, here is what I did: - I gave all the details to the chronic dev team so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP. - I'll put all my energy from now on on the A5

Though it might end up disappointing some people who were eagerly waiting to release the untethered jailbreak in the next few days, it should be good news for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users who currently can't jailbreak their iOS devices.

It remains to be seen how soon Chronic Dev team will release greenpois0n, which will finally bring an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and Apple TV 2G.

As always, we'll let you know as soon as we have any further updates, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

UnlockFX: Upcoming Jailbreak Tweak Will Bring Cool Unlock Animations to Your iPhone

Jeff Benjamin of iDownloadBlog has got a sneak peak of an upcoming jailbreak tweak called UnlockFX, which brings a number of cool unlock animations to your iPhone.

UnlockFx is developed by Filippo Bigarella, who has developed popular jailbreak apps such as Springtomize 2 that allows jailbroken iPhone users to customize almost each and every aspect of iOS.

As you can see from the video below, UnlockFX is quite easy to setup and it allows users to setup simple animations such as Translate up, rotate clockwise/anti-clockwise etc and complex animations such as slide away, wiggling etc.

It also allows you to set the duration of the animation. You can also select an image to show up when you slide to unlock instead of using the animations.

Filippo hasn't provided an ETA on when it will be released but according to Jeff it will be released after the untethered jailbreak is released, which based on pod2G's last update is few days away.

As always, we'll let you know as soon as we have any further updates, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.
