Update on iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPad2,4

iPad 2 users probably know by now that Absinthe 2.0.x released few days back by iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak team does not support the $399 iPad 2 Wi-Fi only model (iPad2,4).

The good news is that the jailbreak team is working hard to add support for iPad2,4 to Absinthe 2.0 - the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

Need someone with an iPad2,4, can upload 200 MB quickly, knowledge of FTP. Send screenshot of Absinthe not working for confirmation.

He quickly got a response from a iPad2,4 user.

Update on iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPad2,4

New iPad Untethered Jailbreak Demoed [Video]

Stefan Esser a.k.a i0n1c - iOS hacking expert who had revealed yesterday that it was possible to jailbreak iOS 5.1 has just published a video of a jailbroken 3rd generation iPad.

While iPhone Dev Team hasn't confirmed whether their jailbreak is tethered or untethered, i0n1c has confirmed that his method can perform an untethered jailbreak on the new iPad running iOS 5.1, which means you don't need to worry about connecting your new iPad to the computer on every reboot.

He confirmed this in a series of tweets and the video:

Esser seems to have used a different method to jailbreak the new iPad compared to the iPhone Dev team. We're assuming that the untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak will work on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as well. Esser hasn't provided any ETA on when he plans to release the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.

Esser was credited for the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.x and had given a presentation on iOS jailbreak techniques at Black Hat 2011 in Las Vegas last year.

New iPad Untethered Jailbreak Demoed [Video]

Pod2G Actively Working On Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 5.1

iPhone Dev team and iH8sn0w have already released Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze that supports a tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.

If you are wondering what's the update on the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 and support for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 then the latest update is that pod2G who was part of the Jailbreak Dream team that brought us Absinthe jailbreak - the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 for A5 powered iOS devices is working hard on it. He just tweeted:

Hi, I've no clue, but I'm working actively on finding vulnerabilities in 5.1.

Though the jailbreak Dream team hasn't clarified if iOS 5.1 fixes the vulnerability used by the Absinthe jailbreak, we're assuming that Apple has fixed it based on pod2G's comment that he is actively working on finding vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1.

So if you're still on iOS 5.0.1, then as advised by the iPhone Dev team, avoid updating to iOS 5.1 until the jailbreak tools for iOS 5.1 are released.

iOS hacker - pod2G has developed an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and Apple TV 2G and has made progress on the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 so far.

In the latest blog post, he has announced that he has handed over the details of the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and Apple TV 2G to Chronic Dev team, while he focusses on the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 that are powered by Apple's A5 processor. He explains:

I read the comments on the blog, and I know that a lot of people are waiting for the A5 jailbreak.

Also, I know there are tons of people out there with A4 or even earlier devices who wants the untether now and don't care about it could be interesting to wait A5 is finished to release or even 5.1, so that we don't waste an exploit that took me months to find and develop.

I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that chronic-dev could help me.

So, here is what I did: - I gave all the details to the chronic dev team so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP. - I'll put all my energy from now on on the A5

Though it might end up disappointing some people who were eagerly waiting to release the untethered jailbreak in the next few days, it should be good news for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users who currently can't jailbreak their iOS devices.
