While we continue our coverage of the new iPad launch, we've some breaking news for jailbreakers. Stefan Esser - iOS hacking expert better known by his Twitter handle - i0n1c has successfully jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.1.
Apple had released iOS 5.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch last week. While iPhone Dev Team and iH8sn0w had released Redsn0w and Sn0breeze that allows iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G and iPad 1 users to jailbreak their iOS device on iOS 5.1, they did not support A5 based iOS devices such as iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
Esser has published the following photo of Cydia running on his jailbroken iPad 2 on iOS 5.1:
Esser hasn't provided further information about the jailbreak, so it is also not clear whether the jailbreak will be an untethered or tethered jailbreak and how soon it will be release to users, but this means that it should also be possible to jailbreak iPhone 4S. It is also too early to say if it will work on the new iPad.
Esser was credited for the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.x and had given a presentation on iOS jailbreak techniques at Black Hat 2011 in Las Vegas last year.
