Your Butt-Print Is the Password

Some people will go to great, if not illegal, lengths to have a signature derriere. Sure, a prominent posterior may propel you to reality television fame, but can it stop a car thief? Probably not. That is, up until now.

A team of Japanese researchers at the Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology (AIIT) have developed a car seat capable of identifying drivers by their backsides. That's right: keep your booty safe with...your booty.

Here's how it works: the bucket seat is retrofitted with 360 pressure sensors that measure the driver's weight and where the highest values of pressure occur on the seat. That data is stored in a central system, ensuring that whoever gets behind the wheel is the vehicle's authorized owner. Wrong hiney: the car won't start.

Researchers claim that the seat is able to correctly identify drivers 98 percent of the time. However, it's unclear how the seat would respond to weight loss or gain, an occasional wallet in the back pocket and different clothing. And what if drivers want to let someone borrow their car?

The AIIT team will have some time to iron out all the details, as they don't expect this anti-theft feature to hit the market for another two to three years.
